AWARDS CEREMONY CAPS 2005 PPIHC
The 2005 Falken Tire Pikes Peak International Hill Climb concluded with the annual awards ceremony Sunday.
Both PPIHC Race Director Phil Layton and Chairman of the Board of Directors Michael Cimino were caught off guard by receiving special commendations.
It started when Cimino presented Layton with the annual Bobby Donner Memorial Award. Bobby won the 1989 Open Wheel division of the Hill Climb. He died later that year from injuries suffered in an accident at a Teller County race.
Layton dedicated the award to the family of Henry Bresciani, the PPIHC race official killed Tuesday after an incident at the summit.
"This goes out to all the officials," Layton said. "If I didn't have everyone's support the last three or four days, I don't think I would have got through this. The award comes with a one-thousand dollar check, which the Donner family has been so gracious to put up with this award. I'd like to take that thousand dollars and donate it to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in Henry's name, which is where his family wanted that to go. He was well-loved and he's going to be missed."
Layton then returned the honor by awarding Cimino The 83rd Running of the Race to the Clouds Race Director Award. "I'm blessed to have an amazing Board of Directors," Cimino said. "I'm blessed to have a great family. I'm blessed to have a great team here."
Pikes Peak Open driver Ryo Horiuchi received the Rookie of the Year award for cars. He finished second in the division. Micky Dymond, who won the 750 Pro race, won Rookie of the Year for motorcycles. He set a new PPIHC overall record for all motorcycle classes after his run of 12:12.614. That beat the old record, set by Clint Vahsholtz on a 750 Pro in 1994, of 12:21.13.
