COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - In a move that will make the Adelphia Pikes Peak International Hill Climb even more successful, the Hill Climb board of directors has announced that the race will be held on June 30th in 2001.

"Every year the Hill Climb reviews possible dates for the race and determines which we think will be the best," said Peter Freytag, chairman of the board of directors. "We know we have to balance the needs of the race, the City of Colorado Springs, the Forest Service, our sponsors, the race teams and visitors."

The date change is for 2001 only, but the race may continue to run on the Saturday preceding July 3rd of each year in the near future if race and city officials determine the move to be successful.

Because the race is held on Pikes Peak in what is essentially a backcountry area, it poses monumental planning and logistical challenges. Race officials feel that by moving the race off of July 4, 2001, a busy holiday for everyone, planning and execution burdens will be eased. The board also feels the move will allow more race fans to attend since the new date doesn't conflict with a national holiday.

The City of Colorado Springs, which operates the Pikes Peak Highway, approved the date change last week. The highway will benefit because more people, including vacationers, are likely to use the road on July 4th than on other summer dates. The highway and the Hill Climb organizations agree that by allowing more visitors to make the dramatic drive to the summit of Pikes Peak, interest in the race and the highway will increase.
