Rod Millen Pikes Peak Preview

MILLEN CONTINUES SEARCH FOR PIKES PEAK RECORD SUNDAY

Rod Millen of Newport Beach, Calif. continues his quest to become the first man to race up Pikes Peak in under 10 minutes when the 77th Annual "Race to the Clouds" - the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb - is contested near Colorado Springs, Colo. this Sunday. Millen holds the ultimate record of 10:04.06, established in 1994 and clocked in at 10:07.70 to win last year's Unlimited Division title. The Unlimited Division is one of two under USAC sanction again this year. Japan's Akira Kameyama is the defending champion of the other USAC-sanctioned division of the annual classic - the "Pikes Peak Open" Division. Kameyama won last year's event in 11:47.44 and is one of five Japanese drivers slated to compete this year. Other entries for this division include drivers from Monaco and the United States, while Millen will face competition from British and a Japanese challengers for the Unlimited title. The race on the 12.42-mile course to the 14,110 foot summit, presented by ADT Automotive, starts at 10:30 am following a special "Challenge of Champions" event at 9:30 featuring racing legends Parnelli Jones, Roger Mears and Ivan Stewart. Practice is slated from Tuesday through Thursday (June 29-July 1) and qualifying for the two USAC-sanctioned divisions is Friday (July 2). Sunday's race winners will be honored at an Awards Brunch at 10 am Monday in the Antlers Hotel in Colorado Springs.
