Speedweeks 1997 Opens Busy, Lucrative Daytona Schedule

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (11-25-96) -- Racers will compete for nearly $7 million and cover more than 7,000 miles at Daytona International Speedway in 1997. Seven sanctioning bodies will organize no less than eight weekends of racing that will involve nearly 3,000 laps around the "World Center of Racing's" high-banked 2.5-mile trioval and 3.56-mile road course. In a 37-day stretch, Daytona will host the world's greatest stock car, sports car and motorcycle races with the Feb. 16 Daytona 500, Feb. 1-2 Rolex 24 At Daytona and March 9 Daytona 200 By Arai, respectively. Along with the stock car, sports car, motorcycle and kart races at the Speedway, motorcycle and sprint kart races are held on the banked, quarter-mile dirt track at Daytona Beach Municipal Stadium, located less than five miles from the Speedway. In addition to the racing events, DAYTONA USA, "The Ultimate Motorsports Attraction," is open daily except Christmas outside the Speedway's fourth turn. DAYTONA USA features no less than 14 interactive exhibits detailing the history of racing in the Daytona Beach area, from the beach to the Speedway. Speedweeks 1997, the first of five major racing festivals at Daytona, is an 18-day event that begins with practice Jan. 30 for the Feb. 1-2 Rolex 24 At Daytona IMSA season opener and culminates in the Daytona 500 Feb. 16. The other major events currently on the schedule include 1997 Daytona 200 Week, Feb. 27-March 9, including the Daytona 200 By Arai AMA Superbike National Championship race; Pepsi 400 NASCAR Winston Cup Series race, July 3-5; Fall Cycle Scene, Oct. 29-Nov. 2; and Kart Week, Dec. 26-30. Advance tickets are available for most Daytona events. To order tickets call the Daytona International Speedway Ticket Office at (904) 253-7223.
