Watkins Glen, N.Y. – Stevenson Motorsports’ two Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.Rs will start from third row of Saturday’s Continental Tire 150 at The Glen. Matt Bell in the Stevenson Motorsports No. 9 Camaro Z/28.R set a best lap of 2:02.043 (100.293 mph) at Watkins Glen International during Friday’s qualifying for the fourth round of the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge.

Bell, driving with Lawson Aschenbach, was the quickest of the four Camaro Z/28.Rs in Grand Sport (GS) qualifying. The session ran under sunny skies and significant heat – a far cry from the forecasted heavy rain that is expected to hit Watkins Glen on Saturday.

The rain does throw another variable toward getting on the top step of the podium.

“We did what we could,” said Bell, who was the pole-winner in the series’ previous two events at Sebring and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. “We’re doing the best we can with what we’re given. The team did a great job. Our Camaro Z/28.R rolled off the trailer pretty close to what we needed. I felt a little bit behind the game just because of how the session worked out. It was easy to get into it. The Camaro is great and the crew is great. We still have a chance; we’ll just have to go ahead and do our best to win this with strategy.”

Andrew Davis in the Stevenson Motorsports No. 6 Camaro Z/28.R will start sixth after a best qualifying lap of 2:02.150 (100.205 mph). He and Robin Liddell are seeking their third straight win the series and second straight at Watkins Glen. They lead the GS standings, as does Chevrolet in Manufacturer points.

Anthony Mantella led the two-car Mantella Autosport effort with a lap of 2:04.211 (98.542 mph) in the No. 8 Gulf Camaro Z/28.R. Martin Barkey was 12th in class at 2:04.875 (98.018 mph).

Scott Maxwell was the GS pole-winner with a lap of 2:01.358 (100.859 mph).

The Continental Tire 150 at The Glen is set for 12:25 p.m. ET on Saturday from Watkins Glen International with live coverage on IMSA.com. Television coverage on FOX Sports 1 is scheduled for 10 a.m. ET on Sunday, July 5.

Matt Bell, Stevenson Motorsports No. 9 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R: “Our car is always good in the rain. I don’t know why. We have lots of torque and you’d think it would do burnouts all the way around. Plus it’s heavy. But it has a long wheelbase and we have the driveability dialed in. It’s easy to drive. I think we’re all doing a rain dance.”

Andrew Davis, Stevenson Motorsports No. 6 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R: “ “(The rain) will be the equalizer but the problem is that it is important for us to qualify up front, and we weren’t capable of doing that today. So that’s disappointing. Matt and I have to start back on the third row so we’re not going to have a good view of anything except spray. We just need to focus on the race now. We’ve lost our outright pace by a substantial amount. The guys from Stevenson Motorsports and Team Chevy are working as hard as ever to overcome, but that’s where it is now.

In the heat of the day, we couldn’t match what we ran this morning. No one was showing what they could do this morning, which is typical. We’re the only ones that seem to push hard. I’m proud of our guys. The rain does throw another variable toward getting on the top step of the podium.”

Anthony Mantella, Mantella Autosport No. 8 Gulf Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R: “I think the track changed on us from practice this morning. Then I was only a second off of the time of (teammate) Sasha (Anis). We just weren’t prepared for it. I’m looking forward to racing in the rain here; I’ve done it before and it went very well. I’m really comfortable running the wet line here, and I think it will intimidate some drivers.”
