FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AURORA V8 CLINCHES IMSA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Brassfield Scores Eighth Oldsmobile Victory in Exxon Supreme GT Series; Taylor and Olds Lead WSC Standings with Runner-up Finish in Dallas
Dallas; September 1, 1996 -- A 1-2 finish today at the Sprint Grand Prix of Dallas by Brix Racing's twin GTS-1 Auroras clinched the IMSA Exxon Supreme GTS-1 Drivers and Manufacturers Championships for Oldsmobile. Darin Brassfield notched Oldsmobile's eighth victory of the season in the GTS-1 division with the production-based Motorsport Aurora V8, while his teammate Irv Hoerr wrapped up his sixth career IMSA title with a runner-up finish.
In the Exxon World SportsCar Championship, Wayne Taylor drove his Aurora V8-powered Doyle Racing Riley & Scott Oldsmobile Mk-III to a runner-up finish on the 1.5-mile street circuit in downtown Dallas. Taylor's podium finish, combined with a mechanical DNF by Ferrari driver Max Papis, increased Taylor's lead in the drivers standings to 23 points. Oldsmobile now leads Ferrari by two points in the WSC Manufacturers Championship. Both titles will be decided at the IMSA season finale at Daytona International Speedway on October 6.
"Awesome!" exclaimed GTS-1 winner Darin Brassfield after racing to his 17th career IMSA GT victory in the two-hour sprint through the streets around Renunion Arena. "I finally beat (teammate) Irv on a street course!"
Wayne Taylor finished 26 seconds behind the Riley & Scott Ford driven by Butch Leitzinger. "We came here to race Max Papis and Ferrari, and that was our only focus," explained Taylor. "When Papis' car had a problem, we ran conservatively to make sure we'd finish in the points. After we completed the required minimum number of laps, (crew chief) Mark Scott told me I could give it my all. I couldn't catch the leader, but I fought hard for second."
Oldsmobile has now won 24 IMSA Drivers and Manufacturers Championships, including GTS titles in 1993, 1995, and 1996. Hoerr has won all six of his IMSA championships in Oldsmobiles: 1986-87 American Challenge, 1992 GTO, 1993 International Sedan, and 1995-96 GTS-1.
