BOB FAIETA AND TONY RIVERA SWEEP MID-OHIO
LEXINGTON, Ohio July 18 -- Bob Faieta, Tunjunga, Calif., had a dominant win in round seven of the IMSA Challenge by Michelin series, but had to work hard to win the second race of the day. Tony Rivera, Houston, Texas, challenged Faieta for the overall win in round eight Friday afternoon, but settled for third overall and first in the Gold Cup.
Rivera made a great start passing Faieta on the first lap. Faieta chased Rivera for the overall win while being hounded by Platinum Cup point leader Dino Steiner, Wehingen, Germany, who finished second.
"Tony made a nice, clean pass on me." Faieta said. "I was able to capitalize on a tiny mistake he made and pass him back."
What round seven, which took place Friday morning, lacked in excitement, round eight made up for. Galen Bieker, Burbank, Calif., started third, fell back to sixth at the start of the race and made an impressive drive back to third in the Platinum Cup.
Wayland Joe, who finished second Friday morning, was a victim of Bieker's charge, finishing fifth in the Platinum Cup.
Behind Rivera in the Gold Cup class Brian Wong, Newport Beach, Calif., and Melanie Snow, Pleasant Grove, Utah, had a great battle early on before Wong stretched his lead half way through the 30- minute race.
"He had a great run," Snow said. "I left him room and he just went by."
The points battle in Platinum Cup heats up as IMSA Challenge by Michelin racers get ready to head north of the border to Mosport International Raceway, Bowmanville, Ontario, August 22-24. Faieta was able to cut Steiner's lead from 22 points to 16 points with his two wins.
