LAS VEGAS, Nev. (October 28, 2000) -- Divina Galica set a Las Vegas Motor Speedway qualifying record Saturday in winning the pole for Sunday's Women's Global GT Series sports car race, setting the stage for a battle between herself and Sonja Bayer for the series championship.

The 45-minute race, sponsored by the Race Rock Supercharged Restaurant, will be the season finale for the WGGTS. The series matches women drivers in equally-prepared Panoz Esperante cars.

Galica, from Sebring, Fla., turned a lap of 1:32.392 (87.670 mph) on her final lap in the 20-minute qualifying session, breaking the track record of 1:32.553 that she had set in an earlier session. She enters the race trailing Bayer by 16 points in the series standings, and Bayer, who qualified fourth, can win the title by finishing ninth or better in the race.

"My car handles quite well," said Galica, who won when the series raced earlier this year at Charlotte, N.C., and won last year's race on the 2.25-mile Las Vegas course. "I feel that I have no hope of winning the championship. Sonja only has to go out and doodle around."

"My strategy is to be consistent," said Bayer, 25, of Germany, who has won three of the five WGGTS races this year. "I want to run fast, but be smart. That's what got me where I am."

Belinda Endress of Newbury Park, Calif., seeking her first WGGTS win, qualified second, with Shauna Marinus of Folsum, Calif., third.

The series will honor its champion with an awards banquet Sunday night at Race Rock, located in the downtown area of Las Vegas.
