FRUSTRATIONS PILOT MARCELLI TO SPEED BUT NOT RESULTS IN UTAH
Tooele, Utah (May 20th 2009) - After what was a pretty dominant qualifying effort by young Canadian Kyle Marcelli, frustrations with car set-up made for a difficult race. The Intersport Racing driver had the pole position secured for the entire thirty minute session until three minutes to go when Marcelli decided that was all the car had. He came into pit lane to save tires for the race but was soon found sitting P3 for round one of the weekends double header.
"The team did a great job for qualifying, the car was working perfect, track conditions were very cool and our lap times were very fast! The car and tires just got better and better as the 30min session went on. After I set my fastest lap, I did one more, however it was slower so I decided to pit and save tires for the race. At that time we were on the pole. Sitting in pit lane I heard that in those last 3min two cars moved passed me, I was actually shocked" said Marcelli
Race one proved to be a frustrating one for Marcelli as he fought an ill handling car around the very fast 3.5 mile circuit. As he was unable to keep his normal speed due to fighting an understeer his efforts led him to finishing P8.
"It was a very frustrating race for me and the Intersport team because we knew we could win the race. When we have the set-up down we're surely to be at the top of the charts, however it just goes to show how important the set-up is on the race car." Said Kyle Marcelli
Overnight Marcelli and the engineers made multiple changes with ride heights, shocks and aerodynamics to improve the car for race two. Starting P6 as the grid was set according to fastest race lap in Saturday's event Marcelli was eager to move forward. The Intersport Racing crew did a marvellous job as the changes made to the car were nearly picture perfect. Marcelli quickly gained two spots in the opening lap, however unfortunately as Marcelli was overtaking P4 he was side by side into turn five, the duo ended up doing a lazy half spin sending Marcelli to the rear of the field. Upset as his hopes of victory quickly washed away Marcelli unleashed a series of fast laps - in fact for most of the race he was the fastest car on the track. Making moves never thought possible on such a fast track with limited passing opportunities the talented driver from Barrie, Ontario wowed everyone with a P6 result in the end. Marcelli's effort illustrated the Intersport's persistence and outright speed throughout.
