JONATHAN GORING TAKES IMSA LITES CHAMPIONSHIP WITH DECISIVE WIN AT MAZDA RACEWAY LAGUNA SECA
MONTEREY, Calif. October 18--Jonathan Goring led flag to flag to secure the 2008 IMSA Lites presented by Hankook Lites One championship. Goring finished 16.1 seconds ahead of Matt Downs in the 30-minute race.
Goring needed to score just one point to take the championship, a goal the 18-year-old Connecticut racer set at the beginning of the season.
"This is an unbelievable feeling. I'm so happy to be here racing and competing," Goring said. "Comprent Motorsports has done an unbelievable job all season long. We've won 10 out of 12 races and all of the pole positions this year. I couldn't ask for more."
At the start of the race Joel Feinberg went from fourth to second. He held onto second place until the final lap when he and Matt Downs encountered lapped traffic in turn six.
"I tried to get by before the corkscrew but couldn't. At the bottom I went to the inside and he (Jon Brownson) washed out and looped it around. That caused me to loop it," Feinberg explained. "When we got on the front straight I went to pass him he came over one way so I went the other way then he moved over that way and I ended up t-boning him."
Matt Downs benefited from Feinberg's altercation with Brownson and took second place. After review by the race director both Feinberg and Brownson were penalized 30 seconds. The penalty moved Feinberg to fifth place. Lucas Downs and Jonathan Gore moved up to third and fourth respectively.
With Goring sewing up the Lites One championship the attention will now turn to the Lites Three battle between Chris Funk and Kelly Toombs. Funk came into round 11 four points ahead of Toombs in the Lites Three championship. Funk started and finished first in class, extending his lead to six points heading into the final one-hour and fifteen-minute race Sunday.
Tom Drewer continued his winning ways in the Lites Two class. Drewer wrapped up the championship at Road Atlanta.
The other championship still up for grabs is in the Lites One Masters class. Jon Brownson leads Charlie Shears by one point. Eight points behind Shears is his Inspire Motorsports teammate Johnny Meriggi.
The final round of the 2008 season will take place Sunday, October 19 at 9:40 a.m.
