FEINBERG ENDS THE YEAR WITH A VICTORY IN IMSA LITES
MONTEREY, Calif. October 19--Joel Feinberg has plenty of endurance experience, but he used a sprint-racing mentality to win the final 75-minute round of the 2008 IMSA Lites presented by Hankook race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Feinberg started on the pole and led the until his mandatory five-minute pit stop. After the pit stops there was a full-course caution that bunched the field back up. Taking the green first on the restart was Richard Berry, followed by Matt Downs, Lucas Downs and Feinberg.
"On the restart I got the shot coming out of 11 behind Lucas. I made a pass on him on the outside in the brake zone for two," Feinberg explained. "I tucked in behind Matt who was behind Richard going into turn three. They went wide and I went to the inside. I got by Richard before five and then I saw the double yellow in five."
The race ended under caution. Feinberg's win secured his second place in the championship standings for the year.
On track another point battle was for the Lites Three championship. Kelly Toombs trailed Chris Funk by six points heading into the final round. Toombs won the race, but didn't score enough points to capture the championship.
"It's been a great season. My greatest thanks goes to my teammate Chris," Toombs said. "What a deserving champion. It's been great fun this year."
In the Lites One Masters class, a class designated for drivers 40 years old and older, there were only 11 points separating the top four racers. At the end of the day Jon Brownson's seventh place finish gave him enough points to beat Charlie Shears by one point to take the Masters championship.
Lites Two champion Tom Drewer finished the season just like he started it, with a win at a track he had never been to before this year.
"This is a fantastic race track," Drewer said. "I've had a fantastic time here in Monterey. I want to thank IMSA for putting on such a fantastic series."
The 2009 season will kick off at Sebring International Raceway March 7-8.
