LOCAL RACER KYLE MARCELLI WINS HIS FIRST IMSA LITES RACE AT MOSPORT
BOWMANVILLE, Ontario August 30 -- Kyle Marcelli, Barrie, Ontario, was on a mission again today in round 12 of the IMSA Lites presented by Frisby Performance Tire at Mosport International Raceway winning his first race of the season in front of a home crowd.
Marcelli started on pole, but lost the lead to Lucas Downs on lap two. Downs led for 14 laps before Marcelli was able to get back by him, two laps before a full course caution that went until the final lap.
"Talk about pressure, that last lap being green and white then checker was a lot of pressure," Marcelli said. "Winning at Mosport is always special, Mosport is my home. I walk up and down the paddock and I know just about everybody. It's really cool."
Downs crossed the line less than a second behind Marcelli. Current championship leader Joel Feinberg finished third, preserving his points lead.
"Kyle's the hometown guy and obviously knows this track better than any of us out here. He was a rocket all weekend," Feinberg said. "I've got a championship I'm looking at. I was still racing hard, but didn't make any knee-jerk reactions. I thought out every lap of the race."
In the Lites Two class John Weisberg and Michael Hill swapped the lead before Weisberg stretched a small lead winning his sixth race of the season.
The final two rounds of the 2009 season will be part of the Petit LeMans weekend at Road Atlanta Sept. 16-18.
The IMSA Lites presented by Frisby Performance Tire is a championship comprised of 14 rounds at seven famous tracks in North America including Sebring International Raceway, Sebring, Fla., Miller Motorsports Park, Tooele, Utah and Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wis.
