Daytona Beach, Fla. – The Plumb brothers have scored the overall and GS victory have in the season-opening 2015 Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge race at Daytona, doing so in their No. 13 Rum Bum Racing Porsche 911. The race was under a constant threat of rain, but only a few drops managed to reach the ground.
“We’re working with an incredible group of professionals, from pit work to the strategy and preparation,” said Matt Plumb. “As drivers, Hugh and I just have to do a good job. They’re (the team) winners and they deserve to win.”
The pass for the lead came with just over 20 minutes remaining, as the No. 20 Ford Mustang was overtaken by the Porsche. The always strong Stevenson Motorsports team placed second and third in GS with a pair of Camaros, a full seven seconds back of the victor.
ST class
Spencer Pumpelly secured the ST victory for the No. 17 Porsche Cayman team, three seconds ahead of Eric Foss in the No. 56 Porsche Cayman. The No. 64 BMW 328I rounded out the podium. The No. 18 sister car to Pumpelly ran out of fuel on the final lap, ruining a potential 1-2 for the team.
It was a fairly clean race with no major incidents and only three cautions to report, all for a single car stopping off the course.
“I’ve had my share of races where I’ve run out within sight of the checkered,” Pumpelly said in the post-race press conference. “However I’ve also had a couple where like Watkins Glen in 2011 we ran out doing donuts. This one definitely felt good."
