GREER, SOUTH CAROLINA, June 7, 2000- Race driver Terri Hundertmark, of Indianapolis, Indiana, has been honored by BMW North America here at their United States' production facility and museum, the BMW Zentrum. The BMW M Coupe that Hundertmark drove in the Michelin One Lap of America has been inducted into the BMW Zentrum for display.
The BMW Zentrum- which is German for "Center"- houses many of BMW's most recognizable and corporately important cars and motorcycles. Several of the cars on display can be found nowhere else in the United States and, some, nowhere else in the world except here at this facility located just outside of Greenville.
The BMW M Coupe that Hundertmark competed in traveled more than 4500 miles in the seven day journey that is the Michelin One Lap of America finishing 27th overall (in a field of 113 cars) and 14th in class. The grinding Michelin One Lap of America began at GingerMan Raceway in South Haven Michigan on May 6th and traveled the eastern United States for the next week. The timed-events that were held at GingerMan, Michigan Speedway, Road Atlanta (Georgia), Sebring International Raceway (Florida), Virginia International Raceway, Lime Rock Park (Connecticut) and Nelson Ledges (Ohio) were broken by on-highway driving stints of an average 650 miles.
The Women's Global GT Series' (WGGTS) regular drove as part of the Michelin North America race team- her team members Spencer Geswein and Brian Smith took overall honors.
"This is such an honor. I never dreamed that a car I drove would be sitting in the BMW Zentrum," commented Hundertmark. "It is a complete circle now because this car was built right here at the BMW factory. We raced it completely stock except for the Michelin Pilot tires and Johnson Control PSI system. So, to have it back, pretty much as it left, but with a few more miles on it, is a testimony to BMW."
"I was really happy with our performance," continued Hundertmark. "The BMW M Coupe just ran perfectly all week long. We never had to worry about it on the highway or on the track. I quickly fell in love with this car. I am tempted to jump in it and start the whole thing over again."
The BMW M Coupe continues to carry the #20 Michelin One Lap of America car designation as well as all the primary and support sponsorship markings it raced with. These include the Racing For Kids colors. The WGGTS rookie used the Michelin One Lap of America to help spread the word about the healthcare needs of children in the local communities in which she raced. The charitable driver is the sole female spokesperson for Racing For Kids, a non-profit organization that uses auto racing to raise awareness for sick and needy children.
Other sponsors included Michelin North America, Johnson Controls, Inc., MsSpeed.com, TCR and, of course, BMW North America.
