PIT NOTES FIRST UNION SIX HOURS OF THE GLEN Saturday, May 31, 1997
EXXON WORLD SPORTS QUALIFYING - SECOND ROUND
JIM PACE (# 4 ATFAB/Oldsmobile/Pirelli Oldsmobile R & S MK III) -- Pace was quickest in the second round qualifying session, but had an engine problem on the course. When you see the car come in like this (on a flatbed), it makes you wonder. Yesterday we had a problem with a shock. That wasn't very good. Today the car was much better until we had the engine problem. But these R & S guys are the best. They'll put in a whole new engine, and we'll be ready for tomorrow.
ERIC van de POOLE (#1 Danka/Toshiba Copiers & Fax Oldsmobile R & S MK III) -- The track is still really good. There was some oil at the end. But the car is perfect. The car is gripping really good. We got some good tires. We tested some different things. We know what we want for the race now.
EXXON SUPREME GT SERIES QUALIFYING
ANDY WALLACE (#66 GTS-1 Ford Ponzo GTRE-1) -- GTS-1 Fastest Qualifier -- The car handled really well. There was some oil at the end, so we couldn't go faster. We had some engine troubles earlier but Roush has done a great job at cleaning it up. It really runs a lot smoother. We're very happy with the way the car is now. All three of us have been here before, so we got plenty of laps. Thoughts on co-driver David Brabham with this being his first visit. -- He went out and got himself familiar with the track. I tried to tell him about the place, but he found out that it's a great track. This is really a driver's track and it's great. Thoughts on the race because he'll be driving both the #16 Dyson R & S MK III and the #66 Ford Panzo -- It's hard to be the guy getting passed
I guess I'll just have to try and keep my mirrors open and not get caught up in traffic. This is a six hour race so it will give us a chance to see what will break and what won't. We're going to LeMans in a couple of weeks. We've got three really good drivers here this weekend.
I raced here last year and had a great time. I think it was the most fun that I had.
MARTIN SNOW (# 56 PORSCHE 911 ) -- GTS-2 Fastest Qualifier -- We had some mechanical problems on the car, but we have always been fast. If we can get the mechanical problems fixed, we can win. We had a little problem in the last practice session, getting two laps in and then we lost the clutch. We tore the car apart and then barely got it down off the jacks in time to get out for qualifying. We just had time to get a quick lap in right away. My wife (Melanie) is the Snow in the other car. She does good. Some day we will race together.
BILL AUBERLEN (#10 Yokohama BMW M3) -- GTS-3 Fastest Qualifier -- Auberle's first pole at the Glen came under unexpectedly good conditions. "The track is so long that the temperatures stay consistent." Less consistent are the speeds of other drivers, as everyone seems to "save it up" for qualifying. A strong advantage that Auberlen has is teammate Boris Said. Ordinarily there can be conflicts between drivers as to the setup of the car. Said, who is running the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series today in New Hampshire, "can drive anything", and adapts well to Auberlen's setup, making things much easier to share a car.
