Hayner and Heinricy take SPEEDVISION Cup win

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (May 31, 1997) -- Stu Hayner and John Heinricy won Saturday's SPEEDVISION Cup for Stock SportsCars three-hour race at Watkins Glen International. Hayner and Heinricy drove their Phoenix American Motorsports Pontiac Firebird to a 1.501-second victory over the Zippo Manufacturing Co. Ford Mustang Cobra R of Jeff Lapcevich and Matt Turner. Hayner and Heinricy led 23 of the 60 laps, including the final six, which were run under a yellow flag due to an on-track incident. They averaged 66.7 miles per hour and completed the race in three hours, three minutes and 18.779 seconds. Mike Fitzgerald and Jeff Purner, both of Atlanta, GA, drove a BMW 328is to the Sports-class win, edging the similar BMW 328is of Jeff McMillin and Derek Hill. In the Touring class, Greg Loebel and Gary Blackman drove a Honda Prelude Si to victory over the Mazda MX-6 of Joe Nonnamaker and Bill Pate. Joe Danaher and Rob Vining combined for the win in Compact, driving a Honda Civic del Sol. Second place in Compact went to David Daughtery and John Phillips III, driving Daughtery's Nissan 200SX.
