Petit Le Mans: Montoya puts Penske Oreca on top in FP2

Team Penske took just two sessions to make its return to sportscar racing felt as Juan Pablo Montoya put the squad’s Oreca-Gibson at the top of the times in second practice at Road Atlanta.

Penske, which is running an Oreca-Gibson in the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar finale prior to a full-scale return with Acura next year, went fastest in this afternoon’s session with Montoya’s lap of 1min12.445sec on his 10th lap of the 2.54-mile course.

That was a quarter second up on Mathias Beche in Rebellion Racing’s Oreca and 0.3sec faster than 2018 Penske driver Dane Cameron in Action Express Racing’s #31 Cadillac.

Pipo Derani was fourth in the faster of the ESM Nissans with Filipe Albuquerque 0.7sec off the ultimate pace in the second of AXR’s Cadillacs.

Patricio O’Ward topped Prototype Challenge class 1.2sec ahead of Garett Grist.

Risi Competizione’s Ferrari 488 led the GT Le Mans class, with Marcel Fassler second in the #4 Corvette C7.R, just a tenth of a second behind, and Earl Bamber an even smaller distance behind the Vette in third place, driving the #912 Porsche 911 RSR.

Bill Auberlen slotted the #25 Rahal Letterman Lanigan-run BMW M6 into fourth ahead of the Chip Ganassi Racing Ford GTs of Sebastien Bourdais and Ryan Briscoe.

Katherine Legge was the star of GT Daytona, her Acura NSX run by Michael Shank Racing proving more than half a second quicker than her nearest opponent, Colin Braun in the CORE autosport Porsche 911 GT3R.

Connor de Phillippi again shone in the Land Motorsport Audi R8 in third, with Jesse Krohn fourth for Turner Motorsports (BMW M6) and Madison Snow fifth in the Paul Miller Racing Lamborghini Huracan.

Third practice starts at 7.30pm ET.
