Goutham Parekh and Arjun Narendran got things going in the final FF1600 qualifying of the season on a cloudy Saturday afternoon.
Midway through the session, Tharani clocked a 1m41.301s which was enough for the home driver to take pole in a crucial championship deciding weekend.
The championship leader Parekh was the only other driver to dip into the 1m41's but fell short by 0.575s off Tharani, after he improved in the last few minutes of the session.
Rookie Tejas Ram did no harm to his top rookie status as he slotted in at third with Narendran fourth. The Coimbatore-based driver had a mixed session all through.
Anshul Shah completed the top five while British driver Hamish Robinson was sixth and actor/racer Jai Sampath seventh.
The last row will see Aayush Saini at eighth and Aditya Mhatre ninth for the first race on Sunday.
It rained a few spots after the session, but nothing to affect the drivers.
Race one will start at 11:30 local time tomorrow.
