Klein Finishes Seventh, Andersen 16th for AWR in Star Mazda at Road America

ELKHART LAKE, Wis., Aug. 21 - Jonathan Klein not only survived a wild start but the young star from nearby Long Grove, Ill. used it to his advantage and went on to finish seventh in the Star Mazda race at Road America Saturday after qualifying 17th earlier in the day.

His Andersen Walko Racing teammate, Mike Andersen of Green Pond, N.J., qualified 13th but had an incident with another driver which bent the front wing of his Pi Research entry and he ended up 16th at the checkered.

The 19-lap, 45-minute race was won by Michael McDowell over Raphael Matos and polesitter Daniel Di Leo.

Although the start looked great on the frontstretch, things quickly heated up as the field progressed around the 12-turn, 4.048-mile road course. The scoring system couldn't keep up with it initially, but after a full-course yellow waved on lap two it showed Klein in tenth and Andersen in 16th.

Klein, driving an entry sponsored by Kalfact Plastics; Fettes, Love and Sieben; Nexus Distribution Corp.; Midwest Steel & Services; Ironclad and ProStar, moved into ninth on lap four. He got by Ryan Justice for eighth on lap five. Justice repassed Klein on lap six to push him back to ninth, however.

Klein stayed in that spot until lap 13, when he moved up to seventh by passing Justice again while they both avoided Brian Frisselle, who was fourth until he was clipped by another competitor and ended up off course. Klein remained in seventh the rest of the way, successfully holding off everything Justice and other drivers in the 37-car field could throw at him.

Andersen was in 16th after the wild start but he was steadily moving up after that, moving to 15th on lap four and getting by Andre Desmarais for 14th on lap five. He passed Brad Coleman for 13th on lap seven and stayed in that spot for the next five laps. Around that point he unintentionally clipped the rear wing of another competitor's car and dropped back to 17th. C.R. Crews had problems ahead of him near the end and that moved Andersen to 16th for the finish.

The race is scheduled to be broadcast by SPEED Channel on Sept. 19 at 2 p.m. Eastern.

The next Star Mazda race, which like all the others is presented by Goodyear, will be part of the Petit Le Mans program at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga. on Sept. 24.
