DALY, KENT WIN STAR MAZDA RACES AT N. J. MOTORSPORTS PARK
MILLVILLE, N.J. (June 15, 2009) -- Conor Daly won the first race and Richard Kent blew records away before winning the second as the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear raced twice over the weekend at New Jersey Motorsports Park's Thunderbolt Raceway. The events were parts of the Mazda Formula X event at the facility.
Goodyear is the sole tire provider for the Star Mazda Championship, the national championship tour for Star Mazda racing. Goodyear also provides the tires for the numerous regional Star Mazda tours. The Goodyear Eagle radials Goodyear manufactures for the Star Mazda programs must work under a variety of racing conditions, from the tight, low speed right turns found on some road racing circuits to the flat, high speed left turns found at the Milwaukee Mile, the Championship's next stop.
Daly, driving for the powerful Anderson Racing team, led all 28 laps of the first race. Adam Christodoulou was second, followed by Mikael Grenier, Caio Lara and Joel Miller. Gerry Kraut was the top finisher in the Masters class and Chris Cumming won the Expert class.
Kent, who also drives for the Anderson team, smashed the existing qualifying track record before the second race with a lap averaging 104.517 mph. He beat second finisher Alex Ardoin by 2.8 seconds. Grenier finished third for the second time in as many days, Miller was fourth and Lara took fifth again. Mike Guasch was the top Masters driver and Cummings posted the best Expert finish again.
Miller's strong showing pulled him within a point of the Championship lead. Peter Dempsey leads Miller, 173-172.
