With a broken suspension Kevin Lacroix comes home sixth in Montreal
Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, Montreal, June 26th. -- In a race marred with a major first lap accident, 17-year old Kevin Lacroix took home his Uniselect #74 Star Mazda car in seventh place after driving up to second place in a race shortened to 11 laps. After earning the second best time in practice, the French Canadian had to start from seventh place according to the championship standings. After a lengthy stoppage, Lacroix restarted in fourth place and moved his way up to second. Pressured by a few cars while exiting the eastern hairpin, he went wide to pick up some speed but his left tire touched the railing and from then he nursed his car to the checkered flag with a broken suspension. He was awarded sixth place points.
"What a race! he declared. I think we should have started according to fastest times instead of championship ranking. There were three or four faster cars then the guy on pole and that's what triggered the accident. I just avoided him (Herrington) by inches by I saw in my mirrors there was something bad happening. I realized the race would be shortened and had my mind set on moving up. When I passed for second place at the hairpin, I knew I would be slower coming out of the turn and went as wide as possible to gain speed. But my left tire slipped on marbles and I clipped the wall. From then, I just wanted to cross the finish line because the car was undrivable. ''
Ready for the Western swing
Lacroix managed to complete the last two laps with an ailing rear suspension: three arms were bent and the fourth was ruptured. "I heard steel rail scrapping the rim and thought I would get away with just a brush like the day before; but it was serious and I had to let the others by on the next lap."
"I'm still happy to come away from Montreal with sixth place points in these conditions and I'm already looking to Miller Motorsports Park in Utah to move up in the standings. We will have two races out West before we head back to the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières where I long to race for the first time."
Utah and Portland
Lacroix and Johnny Walko Racing will head out to the Utah new facility at Miller Park in three weeks and Portland, Oregon the week after. "Those two races will be very important for the championship, concluded Lacroix. I have my work cut out and will settle only with podiums."
Named the Rising Star among kart drivers in 2004, Kevin Lacroix was a multiple kart champion and a 2005 Formula BMW USA scholar where he finished second in the 14-round championship. Lacroix enters the Star Mazda 2006 series with JWR with the support of sponsors that have trusted him over the years: UniSelect automotive network, SKF MotorSports, Raybestos, Tenneco, Pennzoil, Auto Parts Plus and Lacroix Auto Parts.
