Pew and Gomez continue to test in Championship form
Prospect Hill, N.C. - The Velocity Motorsports team continues to test its drivers and Star-Mazda cars in pursuit of the Star-Mazda Championship. With this goal, the team returned to the Carolina Motorsports Park to focus on setups for the upcoming street race in Houston, Texas.
Keith Mellick, Director of Race Operations
"For the second week in a row, the team traveled south to CMP for testing.
We welcomed Logan Gomez back after last week's test and it was John Pew's
first test since the opening race at Sebring."
"Logan is still learning something new every time he gets in the car. He continues to impress the team as he gets up to speed so quickly! We focused primarily on spring rates, damper settings and suspension geometry to optimize mechanical grip in low speed corners that we are likely to find in Houston."
"John has definitely stepped up his program from last year! He is so focused in the car and is showing the speed and consistency that will keep him in contention during the race."
John Pew, Driver, Star Mazda #15
"The test went fantastic! I was pleased with the results and Velocity's
setup of the car. My fastest lap over the two days was almost three seconds
better than my times from last year. The team and I worked on the Houston
setups by running on the short course here at CMP to get a feel for what
the Houston race could be like. I look forward to the street course race
and its new qualifying format. It should be an exciting event. I would like
to thank my sponsor, NVG Residential Inc., who makes this possible for me."
Ozz Negri, Driver Coach, Star-Mazda #15
"We accomplished a lot over the two days with John. We tested many
different setups on the car. One of our focus points was to get John
running on cold tires and he improved immensely on this. I feel comfortable
that he will do well in the next race in Houston."
Logan Gomez, Driver, Star Mazda #23
"For our second test here at CMP, we began by running on the longer course
and then switching to the short course. One of the things we worked on was
the chassis setup for running over the curbs. We do not know what the
Houston track will have in the way of curbing, so we wanted to make sure we
were covered. I look forward to the next race and the qualifying format. We
look to be fast right out of the box."
Tom Long, Driver Coach, Star-Mazda #23
"The past two days were really strong, building on the last test here at
CMP. We worked on different setups and found some strong setups for the
Houston race. I look for a potential strong performance from Logan at the
next race."
The team will turn its attention to car prep as they head to the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course for a test prior to heading to Texas.
