A New Twist on a Historic Design for ABC Supply/A.J. Foyt Racing's No. 14

A New Twist on a Historic Design for ABC Supply/A.J. Foyt Racing's No. 14

HOUSTON March 1, 2011--It was the car that launched A.J. Foyt's iconic Indy car career: four Indianapolis 500 triumphs, a record 67 Indy car victories, and a record seven national driver championships. Paying homage to A.J. Foyt and celebrating the 50th anniversary of Foyt's first Indianapolis 500 victory, ABC Supply Co. re-designed the No. 14 to echo the look of the 1961 Bowes Seal Fast Special.

Carrying over a design from a roadster to the current Indy car provided its challenges since the body types are totally different but the design team captured the throwback look of the roadster while giving it a modern twist with a few nods to the corporate logo.

Adapting the sponsor's patriotic red, white and blue colors necessitated switching the trim from black to blue to edge the red-scalloped nose. Adding a shield of white on the cowling to better spotlight ABC Supply's tri-color logo retained an aspect of last year's car. However, the tri-colored No. 14 in ABC's signature striping imparted a new dimension to the solid white rear wing.

"A.J. Foyt's career is remarkable in both longevity and achievement," said Mike Schwarz, ABC Supply Director of Marketing and Business Intelligence. "With the 50th anniversary of his first of four Indy 500 wins, we wanted to create a design that would commemorate that historic win without compromising our company identity. I think we succeeded in creating a design that surpassed our expectations. In fact, we liked it so much we decided to run it the entire year instead of only at Indy's 100th anniversary race."

The new look has been seen on the ABC Supply show car at home builder and roofing expo trade shows since January but the No. 14 Honda-powered Dallara race car will make its formal debut with the IZOD IndyCar Series season opener in St. Petersburg, Fla. the weekend of March 27th.

"I think they did a fantastic job on this car because it reminds me of my '61 car but people can still recognize it as the ABC car," said Foyt. "It all brings back some great memories, but to be truthful, we're focused on creating some new ones for Vitor Meira and ABC Supply this year. ABC's been a great sponsor and I look forward to the day we can stand in victory circle together."
