AJ Foyt Racing confirm switch to Chevrolet
The revamp of AJ Foyt Racing for 2017 will include a switch from Honda to Chevrolet, the team confirmed today.
Since Chip Ganassi Racing revealed it would switch from the Ilmor-built engines to HPD supply in 2017, it has been one of IndyCar's worst-kept secrets that Foyt’s team would be going the other way, running Chevrolet units for the first time since 2005.
The Texas- and Indiana-based team will also include a thoroughly revised engineering lineup, and a complete driver change, as Carlos Munoz and Conor Daly have replaced Takuma Sato and Jack Hawksworth.
"I am looking forward to what will be a new chapter for us that involves returning to an old friend in Chevrolet,” said team president Larry Foyt. “There are a lot of changes happening within our team this off-season and I won’t minimize the challenges, but I see a lot of potential with our plan.”
Mark Kent, director of Chevrolet Motorsports Competition, added: “We are pleased to welcome AJ Foyt Racing to the Chevrolet IndyCar program. Chevrolet and Foyt both have long histories in IndyCar racing, including prior opportunities to work together. We look forward to renewing the partnership and a strong start to the 2017 season.”
A.J. Foyt, the first four-time winner of the Indy 500 who turned 82 yesterday, said: “I’m glad to be back with Chevy. I’ve had a lot of success with them in the past and I’m looking forward to more success in the future.”
The team is aiming to conduct its first test in the ABC Supply-sponsored Dallara-Chevrolets at Sebring later this month.
