Their Andretti Autosport-Honda teammates Ryan Hunter-Reay and rookie Alexander Rossi completed the top four, with top laps in the 228 and 226mph brackets, respectively.
2008 Indy 500 winner Scott Dixon was best of the rest running a 226.835mph in the fastest of the Chevrolet cars, clocking fifth in the Chip Ganassi Racing #9.
The reigning IndyCar champion’s last-minute time prevented Andretti Autosport from completing a perfect day, as their extra car for the 500, that of Townsend Bell, was sixth-fastest.
Charlie Kimball was seventh for Ganassi, Graham Rahal eighth for Rahal Letterman Lanigan-Honda and Will Power was fastest of the Team Penske quartet.
While Rossi was top rookie, Bryan Clauson gave an excellent account of himself, with P10 in the Dale Coyne Racing-Honda. The winner of multiple USAC National Drivers and Midgets titles lapped the Speedway at 224.767mph.
Of the 1474 laps turned in the 4-hour session that was down for a total of 40 minutes for track inspections, RLLR’s rookie Spencer Pigot turned the most laps, with 84, his fastest being a 222.816 for P24.
Fellow rookies Matt Brabham and Stefan Wilson also comfortably eclipsed the 220mph barrier, their KV Racing machines achieving 222.578 and 222.007mph, compared to their veteran teammate Sebastien Bourdais’ 223.055.
Practice resumes tomorrow at 12 noon local time, weather allowing.
