With a new-tire run that produced a 1min16.3052sec, Andretti headed a 1-3-5-7 for his father’s team, with Ryan Hunter-Reay, Carlos Munoz and Alexander Rossi next up.
Filling in the gaps were Team Penske-Chevrolet’s Juan Pablo Montoya, who was just 0.07sec shy of beating Andretti to top spot, and championship contenders Will Power and Simon Pagenaud.
Jack Hawksworth and Takuma Sato were eighth and 12th for AJ Foyt Racing-Honda, while Scott Dixon and Charlie Kimball were the fastest Chip Ganassi Racing-Chevy drivers in ninth and 10th.
Josef Newgarden, who has qualified second for the past two years here, steered into the tire wall at the top of the hill at Turn 2, the American explaining that the Ed Carpenter Racing-Chevy got loose, then gripped and sent him spearing off track.
A similar incident occurred when James Hinchcliffe applied the power exiting the final hairpin, pushed the tail wide, caught it, and then nosed into the pitwall, tearing off the front wing and front suspension.
