DREYER & REINBOLD RACING DRIVER MIKE CONWAY QUALIFIES THE #24 ROLL COATER ENTRY ON THE FRONT ROW FOR THE INDY GRAND PRIX OF ALABAMA
Birmingham, AL (April 10, 2010)- Dreyer & Reinbold Racing proved once again that they will be one of the teams to beat for tomorrow's Indy Grand Prix of Alabama. Pilot of the No. 24 Roll Coater machine, Mike Conway, will start on the front row and his teammate, driver of the No. 22 Charter car, Justin Wilson, will start 11th for the race.
Yesterday, the DRR veteran had a productive day of practice. Conway quickly dialed his Roll Coater car in and found the right balance on his car that helped him qualify 2nd for tomorrow's IZOD IndyCar Series inaugural event. The 26- year old battled his way through the sessions and made it into his first Firestone Fast Six of the 2010 season. Today also marked Conway's best ever qualifying position since joining the series as a rookie last year. His previous best starting position was sixth at Watkins Glen and Toronto. The Brit earned his front row position with a time of 1:10.6501.
Today's session didn't go exactly the way Justin Wilson had planned. The Brit diligently chipped away all weekend and was working to find the right pieces to make it into the fast six today. He advanced to the fast 12, but he didn't have enough to make it to the top six and was nudged out at the end by a tenth of a second. Unfortunately, Wilson struggled to find the right balance on the car. This will be the second time that he has not made it into the Firestone Fast Six. He has qualified in every Firestone Fast Six since 2008, except for one (2009 Edmonton), which makes a total of 12 Firestone Fast Six Qualifying sessions he has advanced to. Wilson will start 11th (1:10.7760, 116.989 mph) on the grid for tomorrow's race.
What they have to say about the Indy Grand Prix of Alabama:
Justin Wilson, No. 22 Charter Communications: "The Charter team worked hard to try and get into the Firestone Fast Six today, but we missed it by a tenth of a second. We had a good run on the primary Firestone Firehawk tires, but when we bolted on the red Firestone Firehawk tires we didn't quite have the balance that we wanted. It will be tough to pass tomorrow, but the crew will make changes today and we will try to work our way to the front in the race. My teammate Mike Conway qualified second and I'm really happy for him."
Mike Conway, No. 24 Roll Coater: "All in all I'm really happy. In the first part, I don't think we had the hardest session, but it certainly wasn't going to be easy. Luckily, we were quick enough to get through on the black Firestone Firehawk tires. After that, in the second part of qualifying we seemed quite comfortable. I think we were fourth, so we then advanced on to the Firestone Fast Six. From there we still had one set of red Firestone Firehawk tires. It was a case of either saving them for the race or to try and get pole position. I thought it was going to be difficult to get pole, but it's quite difficult to pass here, so if you can get further up the better. So we used them and it got us on the front row. I'm really happy with that and I want to thank the Roll Coater crew for all of their hard work this weekend."
