Cicero, IL (August 20, 1999) - Notes from the Target Grand Prix at the Chicago Motor Speedway
The official track length has been determined to be 1.029 miles. The scheduled race distance is 225 laps (231.525 miles)
Jan Magnussen switched from the Swift to the Reynard chassis for this afternoon's session. "We're basically starting from scratch," Magnussen said. "But, I'm a bit happier with the Reynard."
Firestone claimed the top 24 spots in today's practice sessions, a record for tire maker since their entry in CART competition four years ago. "With a new race track, the tire companies have to make their best guess on compounds and the like without any real data. I'm afraid Goodyear was a bit too conservative in their planning," said Gil de Ferran, Goodyear's highest placing driver.
Raul Boesel replaces Gualter Salles in the AAR entry this weekend. Boesel hasn't competed in CART competition since subbing for Paul Tracy in the season opener at Homestead. Robbie Gordon will race in an Eagle chassis this weekend. Gordon has driven both a Reynard and Swift chassis in competition this season.
Shigeaki Hattori is back in action in the Bettenhausen Epson entry this weekend. Hattori will compete in three more races this season, Laguna Seca, Surfer's Paradise and Fontana.
Indy Racing League team owner Tom Kelley was an interested spectator at the Chicago Motor Speedway today. Kelley was accompanied by his driver Mark Dismore and his lovely wife Donna. Also roaming the paddock area was Bill Riley of Riley and Scott.
Finishing touches continued at the Chicago Motor Speedway on the track's opening day. One section of the grandstand was closed to the public while the carpet in the pressbox was being installed late Friday afternoon.
