Friday morning notes Greg Bailey motorsport.com Motorsport News International (Madison, IL, May 28, 1999)

Friday Morning Practice Speeds increase during Friday morning practice. Juan Montoya continued to run faster laps, but at the end of the session it was Helio Castro-Neves who had the fastest. He toured the Gateway oval in 25.100 seconds with a speed of 182.151 mph. Qualifying begins at 2:15 PM CDT for tomorrow's Motorola 300.

Memo on Memo Jose Guillermo "Memo" Gidley, the rookie who will start for Walker Racing beginning with the Budweiser/G.I. Joe 200 at Portland next month, observed the action at the Motorola 3OO CART race with anticipation. "CART cars are a kick in the pants compared to Atlantic," said Gidley, a winning veteran of the Atlantic circuit in 1997 and 1998. Walker Racing tapped Gidley to fill in on road courses and street for Naoki Hattori until he fully recovers from a leg injury. Gidley, a native of La Paz, Mexico, is packing up his belongings including a go cart and moving from San Rafael, California to Indianapolis, home base of Walker Racing.

Renyard coming along states Della-Penna Racing Officials at Della Penna Racing said at Gateway that the Reynard is "coming along." The team says that they are happy so far with the new chassis. As to the Toyota engine, they just smile.

Cody Unser Update Cody Unser, daughter of Al Unser, Jr., is continuing her recovery from paralysis, according to Unser. She will probably continue therapy for another18 months to two years. In the meantime Little Al is better as he recovers from an accident at Homestead.

Don't Follow the Leader The Thursday and Friday practice sessions at Gateway were unmarred by accidents or problems except for a pace car that blew an engine in turn three leaving oil though turn four.

Changing teams Al Unser, Jr., and St. Louis Blues hockey player Tony Twist exchanged team jackets Friday as the Blues' enforcer visited pit lane. "I like someone your size around to protect me," Unser told Twist.
