Champ Car Makes Modifications To Qualifying Format

The qualifying rules pursuant to Event Bulletin 04-3B have been revised as follows for the qualifying session for Sunday's Tecate/Telmex Grand Prix of Monterrey. Sebastien Bourdais will retain the point earned in Friday qualifying, however all starting positions for the race will be based on the times earned in today's qualifying session. All other provisions of the 2004 Rule Book remain in full force and effect. The new qualifying format is explained below.

The duration of the qualifying session shall be sixty (60) minutes. The session will be divided into three segments. The first segment shall be an open practice of fifteen (15) minutes. The second segment shall be no cars running on track for ten (10) minutes. The final segment shall be qualifying for a duration of thirty-five (35) minutes, of which green flag conditions must be in effect for at least twenty (20) minutes. The third segment duration shall be extended beyond thirty-five (35) minutes until the twenty (20) minute green time requirement is met.

"We came into Monterrey with a special qualifying procedure tailored to provide on-track excitement for the fans," said Executive Vice-President of Operations John Lopes. "After review, and consultation with the teams, we felt our Friday qualifying did not achieve the intended result. Therefore, for today's final qualifying, we will revert back to the original qualifying procedure which the fans all understand, with a minor modification of the time allotments for practice and qualifying."
