CHAMPCAR/CART: Nazareth Walker Racing Weekend Review

GIL DE FERRAN ...

GIL DE FERRAN # 5 VALVOLINE/CUMMINS - HONDA/REYNARD/GOODYEAR

RACE WEEKEND REVIEW: NAZARETH

Started 13th, finished 15th , seventh in PPG standings, 12 points behind the leader.

What: Bosch Spark Plug Grand Prix Presented by Toyota is Round four of the 20-races FedEx Championship Series for the PPG Cup

Gil de Ferran: "Obviously we are disappointed to come out of Nazareth without adding any points to our total. Unfortunately the problems we encounter at the pits, together with a bad break when a yellow came out right after the pit stop, totally put paid to any hopes we had of scoring points. However on a more positive note, even though we where not able to do much overtaking on the track, the car made competitive times during the race and ran reliably all day long. We are now fully focus, preparing ourselves for the upcoming short oval races by testing and helping Goodyear develop their tires."

Perry Bell - Goodyear's CART operations manager: "With the new rules governing downforce, there was very little passing, in fact, it was almost impossible. It took a little longer for our tires to reach optimum grip, but once they did, our cars were capable of running lap times similar to those being turned by the front runners. Unfortunately, de Ferran was caught out by a yellow. He had just pitted when the yellow came out on lap 145 which put him a lap down. This put him out of contention for any kind of points."

Derrick Walker - Team owner: "Long day, the new rules made it a bit harder to pass, by really reviewing pass races, you can see Nazareth is always difficult, never been easy to pass. For us pit stop fuel valve failure set us back too far to recover with loss of valuable track position. Gil and the team never gave up we ran another race trouble free, a good indicator of the quality preparation we have."

Gil de Ferran: " We had a little too much push (understeer),more than this morning, and the car didn't want to turn in Turn Two. But I think we have a good race car. We spent a lot of time earlier this weekend working on full (fuel) tanks and making long runs, and I think we are in pretty good shape for tomorrow."
