Detroit, MI - June 9, 1999 - New Pit Rules Announced

CART announced today that it has mandated a new rule in regard to refueling during pit stops that begins immediately, as well as two additional phases that will be implemented in the near future.

Phase I - Effective immediately, the air jack supply line cannot be disconnected and the car lowered until the refueling is completed. Refueling personnel must step away from the race car before the air supply line can be removed from the race car fitting. Competitors in violation of this rule will be given a black flag, stop-and-go penalty and/or other penalty pursuant to Chapter 10 of the Cart Rule Book.

Phase II - will take effect at the US 500 Presented by Toyota, scheduled for July 25 at Michigan Speedway. CART will specify a standardize location for the air jack supply line fitting. Currently, there is no standardized location and the majority of cars in the series have the air jack supply line fitting adjacent to the fuel vent.

Phase III - will go into effect beginning with the 2000 season, in which new refueling hardware will be introduced. The refueling and vent operation will be contained in a single unit, similar to Formula One. Currently, they are two separate units.

CART also moved up the mandatory dates for two of the safety enhancements announced last week. The rear-wheel, energy-absorving restraints were scheduled to become mandatory beginning with the U.S.500 presented by Toyota, but will go into effect immediately, after the chassis manufacturers in the series informed CART that the components for that system are available. All cars have been utilizing the front-wheel, energy absorbing restraints since the Motorola 300 on May 29.

Also effective immediately, full-face helmets must be worn at all times by all persons over the pit wall during a Champ Car race. The rule was scheduled to go into effect for the June 27 Medic Drug Grand Prix of Cleveland - Presented by Firstar, but was moved up because most teams already are in compliance with the rule and the helmets are readily available. The next FedEx Championship Series event is the Budweiser/G.I. Joe's 200 Presented by Texaco/Havoline on June 20 at Portland International Raceway.
