PacWest Drivers Recovering
(April 29, 1998) -- PacWest Racing Group drivers Mark Blundell and Mauricio Gugelmin are recovering at their respective homes after being briefly hospitalized following Monday's Bosch Spark Plug Grand Prix Presented by Toyota.
Blundell (Motorola PacWest Mercedes), who made contact with the outside wall in Turn 2 at Nazareth Speedway on the 109th of 225 laps, was transferred by ambulance to Easton Hospital for precautionary CAT scans. He was released late Monday afternoon after CAT scans and X-rays revealed no injuries, and arrived at his Scottsdale, Ariz. home Monday evening.
"The car broke loose at the entry to Turn 2," Blundell said. "It was a bit strange, because usually that would happen at the exit of the turn. I traveled backwards a long way before I hit the wall. It was a big impact.
"I don't feel so good, but I'm glad we're all intact. It hasn't been a great day for PacWest, but we'll come back."
Gugelmin (Hollywood PacWest Mercedes) was also transported by ambulance to Easton Hospital after spinning and making contact with the outside wall in Turn 4 on Lap 207. He was released after X-rays of his cervical spine revealed no injuries.
According to Dr. Steve Olvey, CART Director of Medical Affairs, "Mauricio Gugelmin suffered severe soft tissue injury in the neck area which involves spinal ligaments. He is resting comfortably at home [Fort Lauderdale, Fla.]."
"It's a shame the accident happened because we were in a strong position [fourth at the time of the accident]," Gugelmin said. "It was encouraging to be fighting at the front again.
"I'm moving around find. We're treating it with ice for the first 48 hours and then the doctors will decide what kind of therapy to use to help me heal the fastest way."
PacWest crewman Tim Douthat, vent man for Blundell's car, was released from Easton Hospital after was injured when the vent hose momentarily stuck during Blundell's first pit stop. He was released Monday after all tests were negative.
