With both cars qualified on the first day of qualifying, PacWest Racing Group will focus on race day set ups this week.

Although Gugelmin had to wait until Monday (May 8) for his car to pass technical inspection, both cars were fast right off the transporter. Gugelmin posted a speed of 229.481 the first day on the track. Gugelmin closed the week with a speed of 231.821 during the last day of practice before Pole Day.

Sullivan improved on his times over the first week, posting a speed of 221.119 the first day on the track, he finished the week with a speed of 227.987 on Friday the 12th.

Danny Sullivan was the tenth car to attempt qualifying on Pole Day and with the rain delay he took to the track at 5:32 p.m.. Sulliavn's four lap average was 225.496, tenth fastest as the 6:00 p.m. gun sounded.

"The wind was more of a factor than you can feel in the car," Sullivan said. "It was strange coming out of (turn) 3 and seeing the mist and the tower all lit up. It caught me by surprise and I really had to concentrate on what I was doing. Conditions were changing as you ran. But, I'm pleased and I'm really glad to get it done today."

Gugelmin took to the track at 5:48 p.m. for his qualifying attempt and ran 229.223 on his first lap. Gugelmin thinks that the pop-off valve gave him trouble on that lap and prevented him from equaling his first lap speed.

"The first lap I did a 229, but with the dense air, the valve just opened. And, once one of those opens, it's impossible to close and I had to keep my foot down through laps 2, 3 and 4." Gugelmin said.

Despite problems with the pop-off valve Gugelmin's four lap average was 227.923, good enough for sixth position at the end of first day qualifying. Sullivan slipped to 19th position following the completion of first day qualifying.

>From here on out, both drivers will be using their back-up cars to work on race day set-ups.

"With both drivers, they are going to go out in their respective T cars, run on full tanks and try to develop a consistent balance in the cars," said Technical Director Alan Mertens. "We also want to see how the cars run in traffic and dirty air, basically making sure the cars are reliable enough to run 500 miles"
