Lausitz, Germany, September 15, 2001 Team Player's driver Patrick Carpentier earned his fourth podium in the last six races with a third-place finish in the CART series American Memorial race on the 2-mile EuroSpeedway tri-oval on Saturday. The last 13 laps of the 154-lap race were run under yellow after an incident involving Team Player's driver Alex Tagliani and Italy's Alex Zanardi.

Dr. Steve Olvey, Director of Medical Affairs for CART, indicated that Tagliani was alert and awake and had feeling in all four extremities when he arrived at the track's medical facility. Tagliani reported to the medical staff that he had lower back pain.

Sweden's Kenny Brack won the race, which was renamed the American Memorial in tribute to the victims of the September 11 terrorist attack in the United States. CART is distributing the equivalent of the prize money for the race a sum of $500,000 - to the designated World Trade Centre Relief Fund. It was Brack's fourth win of the season all on ovals. Italy's Max Papis took third place, while American Michael Andretti was fourth.

"Considering all that has happened, both this week and today, my podium finish isn't of much significance," said Carpentier. "Fortunately, Alex (Tagliani) is OK, and I only hope that Alex Zanardi will recover from his injuries as quickly as possible."

Carpentier and Tagliani, who started 9th and 13th respectively on the grid, were consistently in the top 6 throughout the race, which was CART's first visit to Europe. The event, which drew a crowd of almost 88,000, was marked by a symbolic pre-race lap along pit row and a musical tribute, including a rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner by Brooklyn, New York singer Barbara Tucker, to commemorate this week's tragic incidents in the U.S.

Brack's victory moved him back into the top spot in the drivers' standings with 131 points, 11 more than Gil de Ferran and 16 ahead of Andretti. The 14 points that Carpentier compiled for his podium boosted him into seventh place in the standings, with 83 points.

Team Player's remains in Europe for the second segment of CART's stop on that continent with an inaugural race next Saturday on the 1.5-mile Rockingham Motor Speedway oval in Corby, England.
