More Testing Updates
(February 27, 1999) - All American Racers conducted the initial shakedown of its Eagle 997 chassis at Buttonwillow (Calif.) Raceway Thursday. Driver Alex Barron (Castrol Toyota Eagle) completed 52 laps before the test was cut short due to a chassis-related turbo oil leak. "The new car feels really good," he said. "Mechanically, it is different, and the grip level has increased. We have a heavy test schedule in the next two weeks and I'm looking forward to putting a lot of mileage on the car."
Team owner Dan Gurney commented, "It's way too early for predictions, but our chassis has a good look to it. The sound of the engine is unique because of the different exhaust system. It's more crisp. We've made changes to the wheelbase geometry and shift mechanism. I'm looking forward to further testing at Sebring and Homestead before the season starts."
Della Penna Motorsports conducted its first road-course test of the preseason at Firebird International Raceway last week, as driver Richie Hearn put the team's Toyota/Swift/Firestone through an extended workout. "We were very happy with the performance of the car," team owner John Della Penna said afterward, "especially since this was our first road-course test. We had the opportunity to evaluate the Swift chassis and to try different engine configurations. I'm pleased with the response that we have had in all aspects of the Toyota engine program and we all continue to be impressed by the driveability and horsepower of the Toyota engine."
Herdez/Payton-Coyne Racing conducted the Mexican launch of its 1999 FedEx Championship Series program during a two-day test last Tuesday and Wednesday on a 1.989-mile road course in Monterrey. Driver Michel Jourdain Jr. (Herdez/Viva Mexico! Ford Lola), driving the fastest car ever to appear at the track, recorded a fast lap of 54.07 seconds (190.49 miles per hour) on the second day of the two-day workout. It marked the third time that the Herdez/Payton-Coyne team had tested in Mexico, following previous tests at Mexico City's Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in January of 1997 and February of 1998.
