The #9 Chip Ganassi Racing-Chevrolet flew around the track in 63.7244sec, an average speed of 127.562mph of the 2.258-mile course. Yesterday's 64.19sec lap by Will Power had been the previous best.
Dixon's fastest was 0.17sec clear of championship leader Simon Pagenaud, who edged Team Penske-Chevy teammate Will Power and Ed Carpenter Racing-Chevy’s Josef Newgarden by hundredths.
Dixon’s teammate Tony Kanaan was the other driver into the 63s, although almost quarter-second slower than Ganassi teammate Dixon. Their teammates Max Chilton and Charlie Kimball also impressed with sixth and eighth fastest itmes respectively. These two were split by the fastest Honda, the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing machine of Graham Rahal who was 0.35sec off Dixon’s best.
RC Enerson continued to impress; although 15th quickest, he was a quarter-second faster than Conor Daly who went off the road twice, the second time ending the session with a red flag.
AJ Foyt Racing struggled, around 1sec off P1 in 20th and 21st with Takuma Sato even running off the track at the final turn trying to improve. But their times were still quick enough to edge Marco Andretti who was only 0.6sec off teammate Hunter-Reay but 12 places apart.
