FIRESTONE FIREHAWK FAST FACTS
IZOD IndyCar Series - Honda Indy Edmonton
City Centre Airport - Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
July 23-25, 2010 - Round 11 of 17
Race Distance: 186.2 miles/299.659 km (95 laps on the 1.96-mile/3.154-km temporary airport circuit).
Firestone Firehawk Race Tires Supplied:
* Primary (black-sidewall) dry-condition slicks: 730, each entry gets six sets (24 total tires);
* Alternate (red-sidewall) dry-condition slicks: 354, each entry gets three sets (12 total tires);
* Wet-condition (rain) tires with grooved tread pattern: 452, each entry has five sets available as needed.
Per series regulations, all cars must use at least one primary set of tires and one new alternate set during the race, each for a minimum of two green-flag laps, unless rain tires are used - then teams are free to use their tire allotment as they see fit. The alternate tires are identical in construction to the primaries but contain a softer tread compound which will provide more grip and faster lap times, yet will trade off compound durability in exchange for those shorter-term advantages. Firestone Racing is bringing an all-new primary tire specification for Edmonton this year, while the alternate was used as the alternate earlier this year at Barber Motorsports Park. The primary is on the more durable end of Firestone Racing's road/street-course spectrum, while the alternate is in the mid-range of our tire lineup. The rain is the softer rain, and is the only rain tire we are using for the 2010 season.
From Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "Edmonton is always such a great place to visit on the IZOD IndyCar Series schedule, as the fans are some of the most knowledgeable and enthusiastic you will find. This track is one of the bumpiest and fastest of the road and street course races, so we are bringing a durable primary tire to withstand the challenge. The alternate spec is a few steps softer than the primary, so it should create a noticeable difference in speed and durability. Tire strategy and tire management have certainly been factors in the last two road- and street-course events, and I expect they will play significant roles in the outcome of Sunday's race."
Firestone "Tire-ific" Move of the Race: Following each race, Firestone Racing nominates three drivers who best utilized their Firestone tires to make a bold, dramatic move during the event. Fans can go to www.indycar.com and vote for the nominee they believe made the most "Tire-ific" move of the race. The winner from Toronto is Justin Wilson, who recovered from a late-race spin to pick up five positions in as many laps and finish seventh. Wilson will receive a $10,000 prize during Sunday's pre-race activities.
