Justin disappointed with 6th in Edmonton qualifying
Justin qualified a disappointed 6th for Saturday's Rexall Edmonton Indy after being forced to sit out the final qualifying segment with suspension damage following contact with the wall at Turn 6.
The No. 02 McDonald's car was 3rd fastest in Group 1 in the first qualifying segment and the incident happened during the second segment where Justin was one of 12 drivers gunning for a place in the Firestone Fast Six. The car got out of shape over the bumps on the entry into Turn 6 and Justin made hard side-on contact with the concrete wall, breaking the left rear suspension. He was able to nurse the car back to pit road; with the 5th fastest lap time, the hope was that the McDonald's team might be able to repair the car and get it out on track for the final qualifying segment. But with both the upper and lower rear wishbones damaged it was an impossible task and they had to settle for 6th on the starting grid.
"I was trying to push too hard into Turn 6 when I lost the car, caught it once, but it got away from me again," lamented Justin. "It's really unfortunate that we weren't able to go out in the Firestone Fast Six, because I was looking forward to going after pole position. The car has been right on a knife edge all weekend and I'm just disappointed that my mistake came in qualifying rather than practice, but that's how it goes sometimes. Still, we know that the McDonald's car is pretty quick and hopefully we'll have a strong race."
Ryan Briscoe took pole for Team Penske and lines up on the front row alongside team-mate Helio Castroneves. Justin will start from row 3 alongside Will Power (KV Racing Technology) and immediately in front of his Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing team-mate Graham Rahal who qualified 8th.
The 95-lap race starts at 5 p.m. EDT on Saturday with live television coverage on ESPN. For UK viewers Sky Sports 2 has live TV coverage from 10 p.m. BST on Saturday. Fans can follow the action via www.indycar.com and the race will also be broadcast live on IMS Radio Network and XM Radio Channels 144 and 145.
