Firestone qualifying highlight: Once again, the Firestone red-sidewall alternate was the exclusive tire used in qualifying. Will Power maximized his alternates to capture his second pole position in as many races this season. The alternate is the same spec as the 2010 Barber alternate. The primary (black-sidewall) spec this weekend features a new tread compound, and was run by all teams at last month's open test here. (A chart is attached detailing tire use by all drivers in qualifying.)

Qualifying temperatures: Track temperatures ranged from 83°-97° F (28°-36° C) and ambient temperatures from 76°-79° F (24°-26° C).

From pole winner Will Power, #12 Verizon Team Penske Dallara/Honda/Firestone: "The Firestone reds were really good; they masked a lot of the (car's) problems because they're such a good tire. It's just the characteristics of this track, very long loading corners, it's just tough to get a balance. The alternates are definitely a level of grip upwards compared to the blacks. I'm hoping in the race that they go off a bit to make the racing good, but always a good tire from Firestone."

From Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "Will Power just continues to display his incredible talent on road and street circuits. Even when he's not thrilled with how his car is handling, he races to the pole position and credits his Firestone alternate tires for helping him get there. The entire Penske team showed its strength by taking three of the top four spots in qualifying, but we're sure there will be some exciting surprises tomorrow. One of the big questions is how long the alternate tires will last for a stint, forcing teams to make a strategy decision that's precisely why the program was introduced to the series. We're eager to see how it all plays out."
