Frijns a “possibility” in fourth Andretti Autosport IndyCar

Michael Andretti has admitted that open-wheel and GT star Robin Frijns could make occasional outings in IndyCar, after impressing him in Formula E.

Andretti told Motorsport.com: “Robin has been doing a great job in the Amlin Andretti FE car and we’d obviously like to see his talent grow with us.

“Often times we’ll get the opportunity to use drivers from one of our disciplines for testing and development across other areas. So there is a possibility of seeing Robin in an IndyCar, but only time will tell.”

Last season, Andretti Autosport ran three full-time entries for Ryan Hunter-Reay, Marco Andretti and Carlos Munoz, with a fourth car shared between Simona de Silvestro, the late Justin Wilson, and Wilson’s replacement in the final round, Oriol Servia.

In the Indianapolis 500, Andretti ran five cars, entering both Wilson and de Silvestro.

So far, AA has only confirmed its three full-time entries for 2016 which are again Hunter-Reay, Andretti and Munoz.

De Silvestro has admitted her desire to return to IndyCar but now her Amlin Andretti Formula E teammate Frijns has told Motorsport.com that he too would be interested in getting a shot in the category.

Said Frijns: “Nothing has been arranged and I don’t know if I will get the opportunity. That’s up to Michael. But if I get the chance, I will certainly say yes. It’s America’s Formula 1.”

The 2012 Formula Renault 3.5 champion, who also starred in GP2 in 2013 before running out of money mid-season, finished runner-up in Blancpain Sprint GT last year driving for WRT Audi, and has already scored a podium for Amlin Andretti in Formula E.

Frijns went on: “I’ve never been to America yet, so I don’t know how they work, what racing over there will be like. But if I get the chance to test or do one or two races, yes, I would love to do that. Then I can decide if it’s something I would like to race in [full-time].

“I would definitely look forward to it. IndyCar seems to be a great car to drive and to race for Andretti isn’t something you would say no to.”
