Kanaan lapped the 1.5-mile course at 216.745mph on the eighth of his 28 laps, narrowly edging his teammate Dixon by 0.13mph, although Kanaan believes qualifying will be a lottery due to not getting a chance to test qualifying setups.

Dixon missed the opening 20 minutes of the session after an electrical issue meant his car wouldn't fire up. But in 88degF, he was swiftly on the pace, setting his 216.613mph on his ninth lap.

Ganassi also had a driver in fourth, namely Charlie Kimball, separated from his fastest teammates by Josef Newgarden who said he was happy that he has a car that’s strong for qualifying and the race.

Fifth quick was the fastest of the Hondas, namely Marco Andretti on a 215.9mph. His teammates Carlos Munoz, Alexander Rossi and Ryan Hunter-Reay were sixth, seventh and 10th.

Juan Montoya was fastest of the Team Penske-Chevrolets in eighth with Will Power in ninth.

Their teammates, championship leader Simon Pagenaud and four-time Texas winner Helio Castroneves were 12th and 14th respectively.

Takuma Sato put local icon AJ Foyt’s team into 11th. Graham Rahal was 13th but stopped on track after 45mins, with an apparent gearbox failure in the #15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing-Honda.

Aside from Gabby Chaves who never had a chance to get up to speed following his shunt, the field was spread over 6mph, with Max Chilton bookending the session for Ganassi with a 210.756mph fastest speed. He turned the most laps of the session [53].
