Gateway IndyCar: Qualifying canceled, grid set by entrant points

Scott Dixon has scored his first pole position since last year’s Indy 500, but this time earned while standing still, as rain at Gateway forced IndyCar to abandon qualifying and set tomorrow night’s grid by entrant points.

That means Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing-Honda and Andretti Autosport-Honda’s Alexander Rossi set to lead the field to the green tomorrow evening, with the Team Penske-Chevrolets of Josef Newgarden and Will Power.

Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti) will line up fifth alongside the third Penske of Simon Pagenaud, who gets a boost from his championship position in the absence of sixth placed Robert Wickens.

Graham Rahal (Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing-Honda), James Hinchcliffe (the single Schmidt Peterson Motorsports-Honda entry this weekend) and Sebastien Bourdais (Dale Coyne Racing with Vasser-Sullivan-Honda) will complete the top 10.

Providing weather allows, IndyCar will have an extended second practice this evening, 7.30pm through 9pm local (Central) time.

Tomorrow’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 is set to start at 7.40pm CT.
