Homestead, FL (March 28, 2008) - The first day of the IndyCar Series season opener at Homestead-Miami Speedway is now complete, and HVM Racing's EJ Viso wrapped up qualifying this evening with an average speed of 208.101 mph, which puts him 20th on the grid for tomorrow's GAINSCO Auto Insurance Indy 300.
First oval, first time in a race car at night, first event in a Dallara/ Honda powered chassis, first single-car qualification attempt…all are things EJ can now tick off his list of "to dos."
It was a challenging day for the Venezuelan, and the entire HVM crew, who have worked diligently for the past 10 days to get to this point. It was a group effort, getting the car together, getting the necessary equipment ready, and for EJ, getting accustomed to only turning left. It was the goal of team owner, Keith Wiggins and the engineering staff to put a solid car underneath him for the first event and build speed as we move forward. As the temperatures dropped (EJ was one of the later cars to make his run) two consecutive cars hit the wall on their qualifying attempt, re-iterating how punishing ovals can be.
EJ put his head down and turned his four laps with one goal in mind: bring the car home. That he did.
EJ Viso:
"My first time qualifying on an oval today, it was really fun. The handling of the car was great, and we were one of the last cars to go out with the air getting cooler and heavier so there was more grip. We needed to keep the car in one piece for the race tomorrow so we weren't taking any chances for qualifying. I really loved it out there this evening and I'm looking forward to the race tomorrow. It will be very exciting to race under the lights, and hopefully we can have a clean race and move up a few positions. The team has all done an incredible job getting the car ready in record time, and I want to thank them all."
Keith Wiggins, Team Owner:
"It's our first event and now we have another on-track day under our belt. Of course we want to be more competitive but at this stage our goal is to continue to make steady progress. We need to keep gradually improving and have a good race. So far, we've stuck to this plan and we'll continue to do the same tomorrow."
