The Andretti Autosport-Honda racer was on a qualifying simulation run when he lost the rear end of the #28, scrubbed off speed and parts scraping along the outside wall, before looping down to the inside wall. The 2012 IndyCar champion stepped out of the car unassisted and was checked and released by IndyCar Medical.
Hunter-Reay says: “We were just on a qualifying simulation there, trying to get as flat as possible. We just had it a little too far forward on the balance and the front grabbed it just a little bit – which is what I got away with last week at the test here and it was fine – and the rear just all of a sudden snapped.
“We had a really good test here so this is unfortunate that we have to reset. The part I’m most concerned about is that tub. That’s our [2014] Indy 500-winning tub and we’ve had a lot of oval wins in that.
Hunter-Reay, who is still seeking his first victory of the 2016 season, described the shunt as big, adding: “You never get used to it. It’s something you can never get used to.
“It’s unfortunate but it’s something we’ll just have to deal with.”
