Indy 500: Howard tops practice, Alonso fourth on Day 4

Schmidt Peterson Motorsports one-off entrant Jay Howard’s morning time remained fastest on the fourth day of practice for the 101st Indy 500, as Fernando Alonso clocked 96 laps to complete an Andretti Autosport 2-3-4.

Howard’s 226.744mph came on the ninth of his 86 laps, to eclipse Ryan Hunter-Reay’s 225.826 by almost a full 1mph, although the 2014 Indy winner was also fourth on the no-tow charts, while Howard wound up 24th.

Marco Andretti grabbed third with a 225.709mph, narrowly ahead of rookie teammate and two-time Formula 1 World Champion Fernando Alonso, whose best was a 225.619mph. Alonso was also into the Top 10 without the aid of a draft, setting a 223.687mph to claim ninth.

Newgarden, who crashed earlier this afternoon, and therefore completed only 35 laps, kept hold of fifth to be fastest Chevrolet, ahead of Sage Karam in the Dreyer & Reinbold Racing-Chevy.

Oriol Servia made it two Rahal cars in the Top 10 with eighth fastest, but his former Newman/Haas Racing teammate, Sebastien Bourdais of Dale Coyne Racing, had his engine blow, but not before he claimed 10th fastest time.

In the no-tow category, Takuma Sato put Andretti Autosport on top and led a quartet of Hondas – Charlie Kimball was second for Ganassi, Graham Rahal was third, and Hunter-Reay fourth. Owner/driver Ed Carpenter was fifth and top Chevrolet runner.

Helio Castroneves and Will Power completed the most laps, the Penske pair racking up 117 and 103 laps respectively.
