Indy 500: Pigot crashes in Day 5 practice

Juncos Racing’s preparations for its first IndyCar race took a hard knock when Spencer Pigot crashed the #11 Chevrolet-powered car out of Turn 2, striking the SAFER barrier almost head-on.

The California-born Florida-domiciled driver stepped out unaided but went to the Medical Center and was checked, released and cleared to drive.

He commented: "I'm not really sure yet [what happened]. I went into Turn 2 like I have been and before I knew it I was backwards.

"That corner has not really been an issue for us all week so it's a pretty surprising place for something like that to happen. So we just have to go back and look at everything and see what happened.

"The car was pretty solid this morning and I didn't have any issues with it, so we were just trying to get a little bit more speed out of it this afternoon and we had a few things we wanted to try. Hopefully Sebastian [Saavedra, teammate] can get out there and run some stuff for it."

Pigot, who normally races the Ed Carpenter Racing-Chevrolet, is on loan to Juncos for this race, as team owner Ed Carpenter takes over the #20 ECR machine for all ovals.

Juncos Racing, with whom Pigot won the 2015 Indy Lights title, jumped at the chance to “borrow” him for their first race at the top level of U.S. open-wheel racing.

Pigot suffered a crash in practice last year, too, driving for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.

Over 2hrs30mins of today's scheduled six-hour practice was lost to rain. Sebastien Bourdais' fastest speed of 233.116mph from the pre-rainfall segment leaves him top.
