- Practice washed out on Sunday
- Idle engines but still busy day
There was no official on-track activity at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday as rain showers soaked the 2.5 mile diamond-ground asphalt racing surface from morning through mid-afternoon in Speedway, Indiana.
Track officials declared the second day of practice for the 2011 Indianapolis 500 over at approximately 1 PM EDT as the drizzle and cool temperatures put a damper on fans, drivers and teams for the second consecutive day at The Brickyard.
I feel bad for the fans, especially.

The fastest lap so far remains the one turned in on Saturday Opening Day by Sarah Fisher Racing’s Ed Carpenter of 224. 750 mph. IndyCar 2011 season championship points-leader Will Power of Team Penske was as disappointed as anyone at the soggy turn of events on Sunday.
"It's unfortunate for us and for the fans that the rain kept us from getting on track today,” said Power. “We were planning on shaking the car down today and getting started on our process. We will be ready to go tomorrow, and I am excited to get on track and get up to speed."
Teammate Ryan Briscoe added, "I was really looking forward to getting back today to continue checking items off our list, but the weather just wouldn't cooperate. I feel bad for the fans, especially. There were a lot of people here at the Speedway looking forward to seeing some cars on track today."
Activity will resume on Monday with a Noon PM EDT start and a planned six-hour practice session set to go off under partly cloudy skies with temperatures in the mid-sixties and a twenty percent chance of rain in Indianapolis.

Rain washes over the track
In other news, race fans picked legendary Indianapolis 500 champion AJ Foyt as the high point man in “The Greatest 33” Indy car driver contest. Joining Foyt on the “front row” (top three vote-getters) in the contest were Rick Mears and Al Unser, Sr. Votes from around the globe were received for the drivers. Foyt will drive the Chevrolet Camaro pace car in this year’s 100th anniversary edition of the Indianapolis 500, on the 50th anniversary of his first of four victories in the race (1961).
"Back then you came to the race and you had 80 to 100 cars and you had your chief mechanic. It was just a different kind of combination than it is today," said Super-Tex. “I mean, it was a hard combination. It was very competitive. Back then, you designed it, built it and then you tried (drove) it."
The 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series season continues with the 100th Anniversary Indianapolis 500 on May 29 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The race will be telecast live in High Definition at Noon EDT by ABC. The race will air live on the IMS Radio Network, SiriusXM channel 94 and www.indycar.com.
The 2011 Firestone Indy Lights season continues with the Firestone Freedom 100 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 27. The race will be televised live by VERSUS.
In correction of yesterday’s Opening Day story, John Andretti and Window World Racing were incorrectly identified as John Andretti and Window Wall Racing. The veteran IndyCar driver and team announced a charitable fund raising project for St Jude’s Childrens Hospital. Andretti Autosport members became the first of potentially 200 living Indianapolis 500 drivers past and present to sign the sidepod and engine cowling of “The Stinger” IndyCar show car at the ceremony in the IMS MotoGP garages on Saturday.
