"Firestone Fast Six" Qualifying Results (mph): 1. Will Power (91.520); 2. Graham Rahal (91.430); 3. Ryan Briscoe (91.001); 4. Dario Franchitti (90.990); 5. Sebastien Bourdais (90.697); 6. Ryan Hunter-Reay (90.656).
Firestone qualifying recap: In the first three sessions of knockout-style qualifying, all cars used a new set of alternate red sidewall tires. In the Firestone Fast Six, each car was equipped with used alternate tires. The alternate tire is new for this season and is making its debut this weekend at Baltimore, while the primary is the same spec that was used to help produce an exciting race earlier this season in Toronto. Will Power claimed his second consecutive pole position and his seventh of 2011.
Qualifying temperatures: Track temperatures ranged from 89° - 93° F (32° - 34° C) and ambient temperatures from 79°- 80° F (26° - 27° C).
From pole winner Will Power, #12 Verizon Team Penske Dallara/Honda/Firestone: "I don't think there's a big difference between the primary tires and the alternates, so it will be an interesting race tomorrow. But the Firestone tires are really good as usual; very consistent and predictable."
From Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "What an event this inaugural Grand Prix of Baltimore is shaping up to be! Thanks to the IZOD IndyCar Series and the promoters for adding this event to the schedule. And a big thanks to the thousands of fans who are pouring in and sticking with us through yesterday's delays and today's weather challenges. Congratulations to Will Power and Verizon Team Penske for another hard-earned pole position. I am expecting a great race tomorrow, as this same primary Firestone Firehawk tire specification was used to put on a great show in Toronto. The alternate spec is making its debut here this weekend, and while the performance gap between the primary and alternate tires may not be huge, it may be just enough to give drivers a slight edge. With the championship battle extremely tight, the pressure will be on during tomorrow's race - but our Firestone tires will be there to carry the winner to the checkered flag, which will be Firestone Racing's 200th victory since re-entering IndyCar competition in 1996."
