Firestone qualifying highlight: Takuma Sato ended Will Power's run of eight consecutive pole wins (and 12 of the last 13) on road and street courses with today's effort. Firestone Racing brought new tread compounds for both its primary (black-sidewall) and alternate (red-sidewall) tires this weekend. The alternates were used exclusively in qualifying, with every car running new Firehawk alternates in the first two segments and all cars in the Firestone Fast Six relying on a used set of alternates for that segment.
Qualifying temperatures: Track temperatures ranged from 73°-76° F (23°-24° C) and ambient temperatures remained a constant 63° F (17° C).
From pole winner Takuma Sato, #5 KV Racing Technology-Lotus Dallara/Honda/Firestone: "I was comfortable in the car straight away today, and working with my teammates, it was coming all together. In Q1, I was so happy with the Firestone red (alternate) tire giving me a lot of grip. In Q2, I think I was asking too much of the car, but in Q3 (Firestone Fast Six) we come back. Battling with the Ganassis and Penskes, it was such a great feeling to be with them. The Firestone tires were fantastic. I was a little worried about getting temperature (in the tires) because it was so cold. The black (primary) tire took a little bit of time to warm it up, but the red (alternate) tire was absolutely superb. Lap three, you can do it. They were great."
From Al Speyer, Executive Director, Firestone Racing: "Congratulations to the KV Racing Technology team, not only for Takuma Sato's excellent effort in capturing the pole today, but also to see teammate E.J. Viso advance to the Firestone Fast Six. Along with Tony Kanaan, the entire team has been getting stronger as the season progresses, just adding to the great competition within the IndyCar Series. The fact that every driver ran Firestone alternate tires for each session of qualifying makes it clear they believe the red-sidewall Firehawks are the faster of the two tire specifications we're supplying this weekend. It should make tire strategies for the race very interesting as the teams decide how long that speed advantage will last over a race stint, especially on a difficult circuit like we have here with plenty of changes in surface and lots of rough spots. We can't wait to see how it all plays out in what should be a sensationally exciting race tomorrow."
